Faculty Recital Features Flute and Marimba

EVENT DETAILS:
The Augustana College Department of Performing & Visual Arts will present its first music event of the season at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 18, in the Kresge Recital Hall.

“Dual Excursions,” featuring Dr. John Pennington and Katherine Voegele, is a recital of varied musical styles, including Kembang Suling by Gareth Farr for flute and marimba, a three-movement work which takes three musical snapshots of Asia, including Bali, Japan and South India. Pennington and Voegele will be joined by Marilyn Schempp on piano and Mary Pennington on violin.

Tickets are $5 for the general public and free to students K-12 or with a valid Augustana ID. Tickets can be purchased in advance by calling 605.274.5320 or online at www.augietickets.com.

Educator, composer, performer, author, producer and conductor, Dr. John Pennington is a professor of Music at Augustana and serves as the Artistic Director of the Animas Music Festival in Durango, Colo. He holds degrees from the University of Michigan, Arizona, and Arizona State. An orchestral percussionist, Dr. Pennington performs with the South Dakota Symphony and the Music in the Mountains Music Festival Orchestra. This fall, he was invited to be a Cultural Envoy for the State Department in Lebanon where he will present concerts, clinics and masterclasses. With over 30 recordings to date, he has recorded for the Ensemble 21, Summit, Cristo, OCP, and Equilibrium labels. With performances on four continents and more than 25 states, he has performed on Prairie Home Companion and been a featured performer at three Percussive Arts Society International Conventions. Active as a composer and arranger he has more than 25 compositions for soloist, duo, chamber and films and dozens of arrangements for numerous instrumental and vocal combinations.

A native of St. Paul, MN, Katherine Vogele is Principal Flute with the South Dakota Symphony and a member of the Dakota Wind Quintet. An active performer and clinician throughout the region, she has also been heard internationally with ensembles throughout the South Pacific, including performances in Australia and New Zealand. In addition, she toured as a concerto soloist throughout Malaysia and represented the United States as Principal Flute of the American Flute Ensemble’s prestigious 2002 France Tour. She has performed as a substitute with the Minnesota Orchestra and can be heard on the Innova label.

Drum Lessons With Matt Haar

In addition to working with the Summerline drummers, Matt Haar will be giving drum lessons, and has openings! All ages, marching percussion with snare drum emphasis. Lessons will be held at Augustana College in Sioux Falls.
